History of Myerstown, Pennsylvania
Before it came to be known by its current moniker, Myerstown had many names. In the 1730s a group of German immigrants settled in the area. At that time, the town was named Herclerode after the settlement’s first landowner, Valentine Herclerode. His daughter, Catherine, was later married to Isaac Meier, who bought Valentine’s home along with his plantation. That home, now known as the Isaac Meier Homestead, still stands in Myerstown today and can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. After Meier acquired Valentine’s land, he renamed the area Tulpehocken Town after the nearby Tulpehocken Creek. Meier laid out his newly acquired town in 1768, but he was tragically killed in 1770, before he could see the full extent of his vision for his town. After his death, people began referring to the town as Meier-Town. The name Meier, which is of German origin, was later adapted to “Myer,” the English form of the word.
Over the years, Myerstown’s geographic location played a huge part in its growth and prosperity. The Union Canal ran straight through the little town, and, in the early 1800s, a total of eight canal locks were put in place. This made all of the streams in the area more accessible and easier to navigate. From there, the construction of canal boats became a local industry and gave way to further growth and development of the town and its economy. Later on in the 1850’s, Myerstown became privy to another means of transportation, the Lebanon Valley Railroad. Built just south of the Union Canal, this new railroad made the town even more accessible, thereby making it more prosperous as well. This trend of prosperity and growth continued over the years, and the town was finally incorporated as a borough in 1912. Now known for its rich well-preserved history and small town charm, Myerstown continues to thrive in the present day.

Fun Facts About Myerstown
When Myerstown was first being constructed, back in the eighteenth century, many of the local structures were made from limestone or logs. Some of those buildings are still standing today on roads such as Main Avenue, South Railroad Street, and South Cherry Street.
Myerstown was home to many men who fought and died as heroes for the Union during the American Civil War. Color Sergeant Henry Brehm of the 149th Pennsylvania Infantry regiment was one such hero who lost his life during the famous Battle of Gettysburg, a battle that many consider to be the turning point of the war.
Albright College, which is now located in Reading, PA, was originally established in Myerstown in 1894. The school was relocated to Reading in 1928, and the Evangelical Seminary now stands in its place.
